Tales of Interest speakers Larry Hall/Martin Rydlo

TALES OF INTEREST PRESENTATION: A VISION OF THE FUTURE OF SOUTH GEORGIAN BAY

Michael introduced Larry Hall and Martin who gave us a vision of the future of South Georgian Bay and where we are going ways to motivate the region to become the nature based, wellness capital of Ontario. The vision of this tale of interest was inspired by Barbara and Larry Hall, who over the next five years would like to create a ‘philanthropy innovation collective’ of people who have committed time and money to enhance the unique quantities that make South Georgian Bay the best place to live, work and play.

They believe that nature based wellness can be attained through six components: 1) Environment, which would involve identifying key ecological areas for protection and conservation and developing accessible trails and trailhead development, 2)Physical and Mental Health, which would nature based sports, activities and related health practitioners, 3) Arts and Culture which would involve agriculinary experiences and music and visual arts activities, 4) Feel-Good Feeling, these would involve nature based community events and self-guided experiences, 5) Youth Development, which would involve places for nature playtime and forest based education and 6) Economy – which would involve eco and tourism related businesses and nature inspired construction firm.

Martin Rydlo stated “with more philanthropic investment, South Georgian Bay can flourish as a hub of innovation for generations to come, addressing pressing issues like affordable housing, arts and culture, climate change, environmental preservation and more. Just think…”

Guest Speaker Dr. Bob Galway

Tom Jopling introduced Dr. Bob Galway who spoke about an old friend and colleague, Dr. Albert Ross Tilley, a Canadian plastic surgeon who pioneered the treatment of burned airmen during WW11. In 1966, Dr. Galway had the privilege to work under Dr. Tilley’s supervision as a surgical resident at the University of Toronto, thus prompting him to speak of Dr. Tilley’s legacy today and how important his work in the treatment of burn victims and trauma care was to the world. Dr. Tilley was born in Bowmanville in 1904 and graduated from University of Toronto in 1929. He opened a private practice at the Toronto Western and Wellesley hospitals in 1935 and was one of the first physicians in Canada to train in plastic surgery. During the WW11 Dr. Tilley was a member of the Canadian Medical Militia and in 1941 became the Principal Medical Officer. In 1942, Dr. Tilley worked at the Queen Victoria Hospital with Arch McIndoe where burned airmen were treated. The patients called themselves the GUINEA PIG CLUB as they were the first to be treated by Dr. Tilley. Because of this, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire with the ran of Captain in 1945. After the war, Dr. Tilley returned to his practice in Toronto and Kingston where he was the first to teach plastic surgery and become a charter member and past president of the Canadian Society of Plastic Surgeons. In 1984, The Ross Tilley Burn Centre was established at Wellesley Hospital and then in 1998 was moved to Sunnybrook Health Services. In 1988, Dr. Tilley passed away leaving behind a legacy that revolutionized modern trauma care and the understanding of the need to treat both the body and spirit. He became a member of the Order of Canada in 1981, an Honorary member of the Canadian Medical Association in 1982 and a member of the Canadian Aviation Hall of Fame in 2006.
