April 2026

April is finally here and the weather is really up and down this month. It’s like the joke that the weather in April is like a couple having a shouting match when one of them leaves slamming the door on the way out, only to quickly return and say
“ And another thing! ”

We just never know when the snow will stop!
Thoughts of gardening, hitting a golf ball and getting summer tires put on the car are floating in my head but wet snow and sleet delay my plans again. However I am looking ahead to the start of a great spring /summer season as our Probus club programs of gravel biking, paddling and hiking are about to start.

And oh yes, the buzz about town this month is all about the grand opening of the massive new Farm Boy store in Collingwood. Everyone is very impressed by the grocery selection, the hot food bar and the size and layout of the store. Only time will tell if the initial euphoria over the store will continue to make it a winner in the long term.

As to the state of Canadian sovereignty there are signs as to the strength of our federal government with a fifth member of the official opposition crossing the floor to join the Liberal party. In a statement from MP Marilyn Gladu she stated that “serious leadership and a real plan to build a stronger and more independent Canadian economy” were key drivers that caused her to cross the floor. As of the writing of this message the Federal By elections of April 13th have not yet been held which could result in further MP’s being elected to a majority government. Remember that when heading into trade negotiations with the US over the future of the tri-lateral CUSMA agreement, that a strong Federal government is key to achieving our primary objectives.

On the international scene geopolitics has taken over world attention as the war in Iran is at a critical stage and the impact on oil prices on the world economy is being strongly felt on skyrocketing gasoline and jet fuel prices. Canadians are working to insulate our country from these effects by buying and refining crude oil from the Newfoundland off shore Hibernia field and starting the 51 billion Build Communities Strong Fund.

Turning to club activities, our speaker this month is Laura Tuohy Manager of Community Engagement from the Bruce Trail Conservancy which promises to be a fascinating update on the world famous Bruce Trail. Tickets for Collingwood Blues hockey games continue to be arranged by Jake Johnson and are a big hit with our members.

The next quarterly couples cocktail party is scheduled to be held at the home of John Kutcy on Friday June 19th 5 to 7 pm.

The Club has immediate openings on the Management Committee for a number of key positions which must be filled if our club is to continue to successfully operate. Please let me, Monty Richardson or any member of the management committee know if you can spare 3 to 4 hours per month to help with management of the club.

Looking forward to seeing you at the April monthly meeting.

Respectfully ,
Michael Coward michael.coward@gmail.com

Cycling New Season
TomJames.png

The PBM Cycling Group Committee has finalized the first half of the 2026 "progressive" Tuesday Ride Schedule that starts on May 12th and ends on July 28th. The plan is to reschedule any rides that were cancelled due to bad weather and add them to the rest of the Schedule which begins on the first Tuesday of August and hopefully ends the second Tuesday in October. The first half Schedule will be sent to the Cycling Group members shortly together with the May 12th Ride Description. And we have exciting news: the Cycling Group Committee is in the process of developing an app that works to prevent bad weather from causing the cancellation of Tuesday rides. Stay tuned.

Snowshoeing Group

The snowshoe group are wrapping up another successful season. We completed eight hikes, enjoying the Winter beauty of this magnificent area. We used several sections of the Bruce Trail, and thanks to Fred Chenoweth and Larry Hall and their neighbours, we were able to get off the beaten path on some scenic private properties. We hope to see more members out next year for fresh air, moderate exercise, scenic views and good times together!

Blues Hockey

A group of 16 enjoyed an exciting playoff game on Friday, April 10! Dinner was at Montanas which was great chatter, good food and just all round camaraderie which carried over to the game watching. The Blues outing is always a treat to enjoy true Community Spirit! Jake

Pre Game Hockey

The boys loading up at Boston Pizza before their Friday night game watching the Collingwood Blues. A fun evening and an Overtime Win by Collingwood!

King's Wharf - Sister Act

I wanted to share some great news—ticket sales for Sister Act at Kings Wharf have gone above and beyond my expectations! In fact, demand has been so high that I had to reach out to Kings Wharf for additional tickets. Because we're quickly approaching capacity, I plan to wrap up ticket sales right after our April meeting.

Record Lunch Group Gathering

A new record for the lunch club: 18! Chucks is a great place for lunch, and probably dinner (I haven't been yet), with the exception of parking. It's a huge restaurant, and the price is right.
