Michael, commented on the amount of rain we have received this month with more rain on the horizon and the price of gas and groceries and how they seem to be going up and wondering when they will began dropping. The only good thing to occur is the drop of the excise tax on gas, but that doesn’t come into effect until Monday.
He also commented that geopolitics has taken over as world attention as the war in Iran is at a critical stage with the impact on oil prices on the world economy.
He then mentioned Canadian politics and that a strong majority Federal government is needed when moving forward in talks and negotiations with the US, to achieve our primary objectives.
Michael ended his comments with the introduction of our new Vice President Robert Zimmerman and two new members: Martin Burns and George Stahl. He also reminded members that we still have Board vacancies (Membership, In Memoriam and Activities co-ordinators) and are looking for members to fill those roles. If you are interested, please contact Michael or any member of the Board executive.
Dan Edwards introduced new members Martin Burns and George Stahl to Probus. Welcome Gentlemen!
Steve Magill introduced guest speaker Laura Touhy who is the Manager of Community Engagement at the Bruce Trail Conservancy (BTC). In her role, she leads a team of responsible for connecting people to the work of the BTC and building support for its mission statement: “Preserving a ribbon of wilderness for everyone, forever”.
Laura gave us a great overview of the Bruce Trail that began 60 years ago by a small group of naturalists that came up with the idea of providing and connecting people with nature. It is Canada’s oldest and longest footpath that follows the Niagara Escarpment from Queenston Heights, Niagara in the south, to Tobermory in the north. It consists of 900 kilometers of main trail and 400 kilometers of side trails. It also consists of 300 access points, 430million year-old geological formation, 91 species-at-risk, that includes plants, birds, snakes and mammals, 700 land owners, 1 million visitors/year and eight million people within a 90 minute drive.
Today, the Bruce Trail is serviced by nine Bruce Trail Clubs that maintain, steward and promote a section of the trail and supported by 12,000 members, 4,000 donors, 1,400 volunteers and 26 staff. If you love the outdoors, this is a great place to come and discovery.
This month winners are Steve Magill and Larry Hall.
